Scarlett's September Hero of the Month

Lake County Coroners Office
 Crown Point, Indiana

This month's nomination is a little different than our previous ones. Our July Hero of the Month, Lt. Steve Houck, has nominated the entire Lake county Coroners Office for their work in the "Workman Tragedy".

This story is very difficult to tell and more so to hear. on June 26, 2009 at 4:02am the Workman family of Hobart Indiana was traveling on I-65 at the Crown Point, IN exit, on their way to Disney World in Florida, when their Dodge Truck was involved in a horrible accident. As traffic slowed due to another vehicle being towed ahead, the Workman's vehicle was struck from behind by a semi truck pushing them into the back of the semi truck in front of them. Their vehicle was crushed beyond recognition and started on fire immediately upon impact. All five members of the Workman Family were killed instantly. Brian w. Workman, 33; his wife Joanna L. Workman, 31; and their three children - Ashley Workman, 13; Tyler Workman, 8; and Ryan Workman, 1.

The Lake county Coroners Office was on scene and had the difficult task of pronouncing all five family members as deceased and also determining the cause of death. We know that they do this on a daily basis, but this particular accident has struck a cord with many in the community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the Workman's. We would also like to recognize the staff at Lake County Coroners Office this month, as our "Heroes of the Month" for September. They do a job that needs to be done, that many couldn't do, and deserve our thanks!

IN MEMORY OF

Brian, Joanna, Ashley, Tyler, and Ryan
